By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

Medically reviewed by Ivan Kokhno, MD — Research analysis by Alex Eriksson · Updated May 2026

Quick answer. Tribestan is a Bulgarian-source Tribulus terrestris product manufactured by Sopharma since the 1980s, standardised to 60% steroidal saponins (with protodioscin as the marker compound). It's the most-studied branded Tribulus product in published research, with several Sopharma-sponsored trials and a handful of independent studies. Standard dose: 1–2 tablets (250–500 mg) three times daily, taken with food. Effects, when present, appear at 4–12 weeks of consistent dosing.

The honest framing: Tribestan benefits from being the Tribulus brand with the most-studied product on the market — but the studies are largely Sopharma-sponsored or older and methodologically weaker than modern RCT standards. The 2014 Pokrywka review concluded Tribulus does not consistently raise testosterone in men with normal baseline. Where Tribestan has data: libido improvements (the 2017 GamalEl-Din meta-analysis found 6 of 8 trials positive). For men interested in Tribulus specifically, Tribestan is a reasonable Bulgarian-source choice; for primary T support, Tongkat Ali has substantially stronger evidence. Below: the Tribestan composition, dosing, the evidence honest assessment, and where it fits in a male health stack.

Summary

Most Tribulus products contain Asian Tribulus. Why is this little fact so important? Well, Asian Tribulus can improve erectile dysfunction (ED) and increase libido, but that's all it can do. It does NOT increase testosterone.

Tribestan, on the contrary, contains the extract of Bulgarian Tribulus, the only variety of the plant that can boost testosterone levels according to studies.

As a result, Tribestan can help any man solve his sexual problems and improve his androgen profile along the way. Still feeling skeptical about this product?

About The Brand

Tribestan Worldwide markets Tribestan®, with Daniel Davies as the CEO and founder of the company. Sopharma Pharmaceuticals manufactures Tribestan. The company operates special farms where they grow Bulgarian Tribulus, the main component of the blend.

Tribestan® was launched to the public in 1970 and for many years, it has been used by professional athletes in Europe to boost physical performance and enhance physique.

At first, the drug was available only in Bulgaria but already by 1985 it started to be exported to other countries.

Well, Sopharma Pharmaceuticals developed a patented technology for extracting protragracillin and protodioscin. These two phytochemicals are the active compounds in Bulgarian Tribulus that define its powerful action.

Over the years, many companies have tried to imitate Tribestan’s formula. However, unlike Tribestan, they use the Indian and Chinese Tribulus varieties that can’t boost T levels. By adding small amounts of Bulgarian Tribulus extract, they were able to dishonestly market their products as a testosterone-boosting, and thus mislead consumers.

Tribestan®, on the other hand, uses purely Bulgarian Tribulus in the manufacture process of their supplement.

The product has passed standard laboratory tests in the US, including clinical trials and liquid chromatography. For decades, it has been utilized by prominent professional sportsmen, such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

By using pregnenolone cream or pregnenolone supplements, the levels of the compound in the body increases, and this brings about various benefits such as fatigue relief, and delay of the aging process.

Main Ingredients

Saponins, such as protodioscin, and protogracillin, are the main components of Tribestan. These are the exact compounds that naturally boost testosterone levels.

In general, every 500 mg tablet contains the following ingredients:

  • Cabosil
  • Polyplasdone
  • Microcrystalline Cellulose
  • check
    Polyvinilpirolidone
  • check
    Magnesium Stearate
  • check
    Film Coating
  • check
    Saponins

    Flavonoids

Saponins are plant compounds found in herbs like fenugreek and Tribulus terrestris. According to a study from November 2016, saponins from Tribulus terrestris may increase serum levels of corticosterone, testosterone, and insulin growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) after training. Furthermore, they may boost time to exhaustion.

Even after overtraining, the subjects who received 120 mg/kg of saponins experienced dramatically increased free testosterone levels.

A handful of Chinese science researchers took a closer look at the many compounds in Tribulus Terrestris and identified various chemical structures such as flavonoids, proteins, and amino acids.

Among the various bioactive compounds from the plant, flavonoids and steroidal saponins are the most important.

To date, 108 kinds of saponins have been isolated from the Tribulus terrestris for study, with protogracillin and protodioscin, being the most important in maintaining testosterone levels.

For instance, athletic fatigue is measured by the levels of corticosterone and free testosterone in the body. Tribulus Terrestris has been used to bolster athletic ability through mimicking testosterone effects and increasing the production of cortisol, testosterone, and corticotropin.

However, note that only the Bulgarian variety of the plant was discovered to have high levels of protodioscin. Samples from Vietnam and India do not contain saponins that can boost testosterone naturally.

If a Tribulus supplement is sourced elsewhere other than eastern Europe, it probably contains low levels of protogracillin and protodioscin.

Such products could be differentiated clinically from the supplements consisting of Tribulus leaf standardized extract (TLSE). This extract is obtained from the aerial parts of the plant, which contains furostanol and steroidal saponins.

    Solves Sexual Problems
Taking Tribestan® can improve the sexual experience of men and women who have low libido. It also bolsters arousal, orgasm intensity, sexual comfort, libido, and lubrication.
  • Treats Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
As determined by David Kiefer, MD, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Arizona, Bulgarian Tribulus can improve ED and sexual satisfaction in men.
  • Enhances Athletic Performance
Taking Tribestan® by mouth enhances the exercise performance and body composition of athletes.

    Enlarged Prostate
In a study, men with enlarged prostate were given curry leaf and Tribulus supplements high in protodioscin. After 12 weeks, the size of their prostate decreased.

Side effects in men are uncommon. Generally, the product is safe for most people, but there is some evidence that it could cause heavy menstrual bleeding in women. As a result, it should be kept away from pregnant women too.

All in all, Tribestan® has been tested for side effects in lab studies that lasted for up to 3 months. In rare cases, the participants reported excitation, mild muscle cramps, and mild sleep issues.

How To Use

Usually, Tribestan® is recommended in a starting dose of 2-3 tablets three times per day for 45 days. However, the optimal dosage depends on your body weight, so make sure to check the instructions.

The recommended maintenance dosage is 1 tablet per day for 45 days.

The Verdict

Tribestan is made with carefully selected natural-occurring plant compounds that can boost your testosterone levels. Aside from that, it has been proven beneficial in the treatment of eczema, diabetes, ED, and enlarged prostate.

This product has been tested and studied for nearly 50 years. Sopharma pharmaceuticals sources their Tribulus from a company-owned farm and uses exclusively the Bulgarian variety of Tribulus terrestris to manufacture Tribestan supplements. Each 500 mg contains 45% protodioscin and other saponins that can naturally increase the production of testosterone.

Where Tribestan Fits in a Male Health Stack

Tribestan is one of many Bulgarian Tribulus options, with the marketing edge of being the most studied. Whether the additional product-specific research justifies the premium over generic Bulgarian Tribulus extract is debatable. Practical layering:

  • Foundation (strongest evidence): Tongkat Ali 200–400 mg/day for testosterone substrate — far stronger human RCT evidence than any Tribulus product, including Tribestan.
  • Direct androgen / DHT: Butea Superba for downstream signal.
  • Acute vasodilation / PDE5: Black Ginger (Kaempferia parviflora) 100–200 mg/day — documented natural PDE5 inhibitor.
  • Cortisol modulation: Ashwagandha 600 mg/day KSM-66.
  • Tribestan as Tribulus rotation: 250 mg three times daily with food. Cycle 8–12 weeks on, 2–4 weeks off. Reasonable if you want the most-studied product specifically; otherwise generic Bulgarian Tribulus extract at 90% saponins is a more cost-effective alternative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Tribestan really work for testosterone?
A: Weakly and inconsistently. Sopharma-sponsored studies show positive T effects; independent studies are more mixed. The 2014 Pokrywka review covering Tribulus broadly concluded no consistent T elevation in men with normal baseline levels. Tribestan benefits from familiarity and being the most-studied branded product, but the underlying Tribulus evidence is what it is.

Q: How much Tribestan per day?
A: Standard label dosing: 1–2 tablets (each 250 mg) three times daily, with meals. Total daily intake: 750–1,500 mg of standardised extract. Take with food to improve absorption. Effects appear at 4–12 weeks of consistent use.

Q: Tribestan vs other Bulgarian Tribulus products?
A: Tribestan has the longest pharmaceutical-grade history (since the 1980s) and the most published product-specific research. Generic Bulgarian Tribulus extracts at 90% saponin standardisation are typically cheaper and chemically similar. The premium for Tribestan is largely brand and history; quality of properly-manufactured generic Bulgarian extract is comparable.

Q: Is Tribestan banned in sports?
A: Tribestan itself is not banned by WADA or sports anti-doping bodies. However, Tribulus products in general (including Tribestan) are at risk of contamination with anabolic steroid analogues that WILL fail competition testing. The 2017 Joseph case studies documented WADA-positive tests in athletes who took adulterated "Tribulus" products. For tested athletes, only use third-party-certified products (NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, BSCG).

Q: Are there side effects to Tribestan?
A: Generally well-tolerated at standard doses. Mild GI upset is the most common side effect. Some users report sleep disruption if taken late in the day. Tribestan is contraindicated in prostate conditions (theoretical concern based on saponin mechanism), pregnancy, and breastfeeding. If you have prostate issues or are on prostate-related medication (finasteride, dutasteride), discuss with your prescriber before starting.
