What To Look For In A Protein Bar

Protein bars are such a good portable source of protein that some of them can even provide you with a big chunk of your daily protein requirement. Paleo friendly protein bars are even better because the proteins are from healthy sources.

However, not all protein bars are made equal. Some are more candy than healthy paleo snacks. Some may even be harmful to health from the artificial ingredients. Worse, some protein bars are intentionally mislabeled and made to appear paleo-friendly.

Here are some things you can do when buying protein bars to make sure you pick good ones:

Always Read Labels

Be very particular about the ingredient. Some unhealthy ingredients have many different names that may seem to be harmless. Some paleo snacks for weight loss, for instance, may contain hidden sugars that will cause more weight gain than weight loss.

Check if It’s Organic

Going organic is usually the best option as organic food is made from sources that were not exposed to harmful synthetic chemicals like pesticides.

Check for Potential Allergens

This is very important, especially when choosing paleo snacks for kids. Some paleo protein bars may contain peanuts, tree nuts or gluten. Some may not contain common food allergens but were made in the same place where these are used in their other food products (risk for contamination).

Check Nutritional Profile

When choosing paleo snacks for work, check that the nutrients you need are supplied by these snacks. Some snacks contain vitamins and minerals such as iron.

Check Net Carb Impact or GI

While protein bars contain mostly protein, some may still contain lots of carbs. Check if the amount of carbs could cause blood sugar levels and insulin levels to rapidly rise and fall. Some paleo ingredients can be bad for blood sugar and insulin if eaten in unhealthy amounts. You need carbs from paleo snacks on the go but you need to have the healthy kind of carbs.

Some paleo ingredients can be bad for blood sugar and insulin if eaten in unhealthy amounts. You need carbs from paleo snacks on the go but you need to have the healthy kind of carbs, not too much sugars.

Despite all the advantages and health benefits, not all protein bars are the same. But the clear winner as the best paleo bar is the EXO Cricket Flour Protein Bars, especially if we’re going to consider protein content as the key factor. Compared to traditional animal proteins, insects are cleaner sources of proteins.

It can be off-putting that the paleo snack bars from EXO are made from ground-up insects but once you try them, you’ll know that they don’t even taste the least bit unpleasant.

The other ingredients such as the nuts and fruits give good flavors and excellent textures. You aren’t likely to get tired of these bars because of the different flavors. They can be a meal replacement because of its excellent nutrient profile. The cricket flour they’re made with is 100% organic and rich in proteins. Even kids wouldn’t mind eating these bars once they try the flavors.

If you prefer a meat-based bar our winning bar would be Epic All Natural Meat Bar, 100% Natural, Lamb, Currant & Mint. Epic bars are all made from organic grass fed meats and available in many flavours and options. If you are trying to lose some weight these are a great option because of their low carb and calorie content.
